CHONTAL STONE MASK

Distinguished by the small bird perched on the forehead probably a totemic companion, the naturalistic face with characteristic pierced features with prominent brows and cheeks; in mottled green and white porphyry.

The variety of face panels and masks in the Chontal style range from naturalistic to abstract forms. This mask is an example of the contrasts between rounded and flattened planes.

Lot Essay

Masque portrait aux arcades sourcilières et aux joues proéminentes, comportant une coiffure décorée d’un petit oiseau-totem.

Le corpus des masques portraits Chontal comprend des visages qui vont des plus réalistes aux évocations les plus abstraites. Le masque ici présenté est un exemple avec des alternances de rendus de formes arrondies ou planes.
