INTERNATIONAL STYLE GOLD ZOOMORPHIC PENDANT

The reptilian deity with legs bent at the sides, bifurcated curling tail, holding in its jaws a flaring element with crenelated border and spiral sprays emanating at the sides; suspension loop on the reverse.

The Crocodile God is one of the oldest and most widely recognized of themes in Isthmo-Colombian (International Style) goldwork. Among peoples from southern Nicaragua to Mesoamerica the earth was likened to the back of a crocodile floating in the primordial sea, its dorsal scutes being the volcanic north-south backbone that defines the continents of the Western Hemisphere.

Lot Essay

Divinité d’apparence reptilienne aux jambes repliées sur les côtés, avec des ongles bien délimités et incurvés, tenant dans sa gueule un motif évasé aux bordures crénelées encadré de goutes en forme de spirales, et comportant une attache de suspension à l’arrière.

Le Dieu Crocodile est l’une des thématiques de l’orfèvrerie Isthmo-colombienne (Style International) parmi les plus anciennes et les plus facilement reconnaissables. D’après les civilisations rencontrées depuis le sud du Nicaragua jusqu’en Amérique Centrale, la terre était assimilée au dos d’un crocodile nageant dans la mer primordiale et dont les épines dorsales représentaient les chaines volcaniques nord et sud qui délimitent les continents de l’hémisphère ouest.
