Of Renaissance style, the domed top surmounted by a putto finial and resting above an architectural case inset with 'jewelled' Sèvres-style turquoise ground porcelain plaques finely painted with the four seasons, the breakfront canted base beneath fluted pilasters mounted with seated angels, the twin barrel movement with count wheel strike on bell, the dial signed 'Raingo Fres/ Paris', variously stamped 1555, the underside inscribed '1555 a picard'

The Parisian fondeur and doreur Henri Picard was based at 6 rue Jarente in 1831, moving to 10 rue de la Perle in 1839 where he remained until 1864. His firm worked on the petits appartements of Emperor Napoléon III at the Louvre, and was known for its fine quality production of pièces de table and garnitures de cheminée.
