Sale room notice
We are grateful to Cathryn Spence for advising In addition to the present watercolour there are 5 other sketches relating to the 3 known Woodside paintings (the other 2 are in private ownership). The seventeenth-century mansion on the site was called called Waltons after Thomas Walton who owned the estate in the 14th Century. Walton was the King’s valet and butler and became Keeper of the Windsor Parks and Surveyor and Controller of the Castle Works. In 1537 the house was sold, by Thomas Gibbons, to Henry VIII and remained Crown property until granted by Elizabeth I to Humfrey Michel whose descendants subsequently gifted it to Queen’s College, Oxford when it was known as Turret House. Subsequent owners include the Hon. Charles Fane, then Hugh Hammersely who named it Woodside.
