Bottled in 1994.
Very rare, after phylloxera this grape variety was nearly extinct. Hence the number of available bottles of vintage Bastardo are limited.
This wine comes from the private family reserves of the Blandy family. I feel privileged to have tasted this wine over a number of occasions, always leaving a big impression. Only a few bottles remain. Aged in the Blandy’s wine lodge in the center of Funchal for 40 years. 130 gr/ltr residual sugar.
Tasting note: Sweet backward nose, dried red fruits.
First taste was somewhat course but later evolving to sweet dried currants and honeycake aroma’s. A though start as if this wine had to be conquered then revealing its phenomenal taste. Intense, ending with a slight beautiful red grapefruit bitterness. A rare beauty. Last tasted September 2011 at the Blandy bi centennial celebration, Edwin Vos. Still one of the most memorable Madeira’s I have tasted.
