WIT, Frederick de (1629/1630-1706) Novissima et Accuratissima totius Americae Descriptio. Amsterdam, [1678].
The first Dutch map to show five Great Lakes in North America. Based on de Wit's great wall map of 1672 (see Burden II, 428), but with the Great Lakes considerably improved, as is the western coastline of Hudson's Bay. These two features are derived from Guillaume Sanson's work published in 1669; the decorative cartouches are from Visscher's same map of c.1658. The island of California now has an indented northern coastline. Burden II, 465 (third state); Tooley California as an Island 30.
Engraved double-page map, coloured by a contemporary hand, verso blank, longitudinal lines numbered to the nearest 8, Canary Islands engraved showing Madera Ins., decorative ships, compass rose in Pacific, 492 x 586mm (plate mark), 518 x 605mm (sheet).
