HOMANN, Johann Baptist (1644-1724). Nova Anglia Septentrionali Americae implantata Anglorumque coloniis florentissima. Nuremberg: [c.1720].
Fine map of New England, from Delaware Bay to the St. John River, published in response to high demand from German interest in America. The most prominent feature of the map is the large Lake Champlain with its broad channel flowing into the St Lawrence River. Other curious quirks in the cartography include a number of mythical lakes in New York, and the eastern part of Cape Cod is shown as an island. Many Colonial and Indian placenames are shown, although at this time the increased number of English settlements means that Native American tribal names are notably less plentiful than on Dutch maps of the previous century. Philadelphia and Boston are shown as the major cities, while New York is not depicted. Goss 50; McCorkle 724.1 (illustrating the later state); Portinaro & Knirsch pl. 116.
