Georges Cuvier’s copy of the first French edition. First published in English in 1770-1771, Dalrymple’s historical account of the discoveries in the South Pacific was intended ‘to strengthen his claim of the existence of a southern continent, which was finally dispelled by Cook's second voyage’ (Hill). Sabin 18344.

Octavo (197 x 120mm). 3 folding engraved maps (small stains to first map). Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt (some skilful repairs to joints and edges). Provenance: Georges Cuvier (French zoologist, 1769-1832; ink stamp) – Museum d’histoire naturelle (ink stamp) – another stamp, faded.
