First French edition of a wide-ranging description of Iceland, covering such subjects as its commerce, antiquities, literature, religion, diseases and geographical features including volcanoes and geysers. The author also visited Fingal’s cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa in the Inner Hebrides. First published in Sweden in 1777, the present lot is considered the best edition as it incorporates notes and revisions from the earlier English and German editions. Cf. Cox I, 185.
Octavo (192 x 120mm). Half-title, 5 engraved folding plates comprising 2 maps and 3 views, and one folding table (first and last leaves faintly browned at margins). Contemporary mottled calf (expertly rebacked, edges refreshed, slightly rubbed).
