Sculture7-1879).
A rival of Michelangelo (1475-1564), the great draughtsman and sculptor Baccio Bandinelli was widely patronised by the Medici. Loyal to the great banking family before and throughout their exile, Bandinelli received a great number of commissions from the House of Medici, which increased further when Cosimo I de’ Medici assumed the role of Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1537. These include several portrait busts of the Grand Duke, including the model for the present lot. Bronze examples of this bust with a slight variation to the shirt beneath the breast plate are also known to have been cast in 1545 and possibly later; one such bronze is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (inv. A.60-1953). A variant marble bust with a more elaborate breast plate is in the collection of the Museo del Bargello, Florence, dated circa 1544 (inv. Sculture7-1879).
