Né dans une famille de sculpteurs possédant des ateliers dans le sud de l’Allemagne et le nord de la Suisse aux alentours du lac de Constance, Schenck est devenu un sculpteur important de l’imagerie religieuse durant la Contre-Réforme, une période de renouveau artistique durant laquelle les églises et les monastères étaient restaurés et redécorés. Il représentait fréquemment des figures et des scènes religieuses de souffrances et de pénitences.
