FLOWN ON APOLLO 14 – New Mexico State flag, 1971.

Accompanying astronaut Edgar Mitchell to the Moon on Apollo 14.

SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Edgar MITCHELL. This flag is displayed on a typed and signed provenance letter in which Mitchell writes about his childhood in New Mexico and the prophetic encounters with Dr. Robert Goddard in those days: "I grew up in Roswell, New Mexico from the late 1930s through the 1940s and remember passing by Dr. Robert Goddard’s home during my walk to school each day. His efforts with liquid fueled rockets at that time would prove to be one of the most important achievements that would later help me make my journey to the Moon. It was with great honor that I carried this flag on my flight. I have written ‘Flown to the Moon on Apollo 14, Edgar Mitchell’ along the bottom of the flag.”

Silk flag, 4 by 6 inches. [With:] Color photolithograph, 10 by 8 inches, Saturn V launch from the Kennedy Space Center, 31 January 1971. Archivally matted to 13.25 by 19.75 inches (image online).
