APOLLO 15 – Photograph signed. 1971.

Extensive lunar surface experiments documented in a signed photograph.

SIGNED and INSCRIBED: "Man must explore and this is exploration at its greatest Dave Scott, Apollo 15 CDR, 1971." This is an excerpt from Scott's comments to Mission Control as he descended Lunar Module Falcon’s ladder to become the seventh man to step upon the Moon: “Okay, Houston. As I stand out here in the wonders of the unknown at Hadley, I sort of realize there's a fundamental truth to our nature. Man must explore… And this is exploration at its greatest.” Several experiments can be seen in the foreground as Scott himself leans over to reach for the lunar surface drill. This instrument drilled a core tube into surface allowing a several feet of subsurface material to be extracted for study. The astronaut later placed a heat outflow measuring device into the drill hole cavity.

Large color photograph, 16 by 20 inches.
