Intended as the introduction to a multi-volume work that was never finished, this ‘masterly justification and exposition of the use of the experimental method in studying life phenomena has remained a classic of both scientific and philosophical literature’ (Norman). Octavo (212 x 133mm). Half-title with ‘Crété’ imprint at foot of verso. Contemporary black boards, green paper spine label with manuscript title (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Prof. Joseph Meyer (contemporary ink stamp).
