Representing the vice of Pride, this composition belongs to a series of prints of the Seven Deadly Sins after drawings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (Fondation Custodia, Paris, inv. no. 465), engraved by Pieter van der Heyden (see F.W.H. Hollstein, Dutch and Flemish Etchings, Engravings and Woodcuts, ca. 1450-1700, III, Amsterdam, 1949, p. 277, no. 127).
