Lot Essay

It is not widely known that Bill Cunningham had a brief but illustrious career as a milliner in New York in the 1950s. His varied roster of clientele included names like Brooke Astor and Marilyn Monroe. Most famously, Bill Cunningham designed an elaborate headdress worn by Truman Capote to his Black and White Ball in 1966 and 1967. Though mostly undocumented, he designed a few select objects and pieces of furniture, including the present lot, for close friends. The present mirror was acquired directly from the estate of Kenneth Paul Block, who was gifted the mirror along with an ornate feathered mask.
