The original design source for the present carpet stems from earlier 18th century Caucasian 'Dragon' carpets although the appearance of stylised 'dragons' has long been forgotten. An Agra carpet of the same design but on a green ground sold in these Rooms, 29 April 2004, lot 220 and another on a burgundy ground sold 25 April 1996, lot 333. For further discussion on carpet production in India in the 19th century, see lot 266 in the same sale.
