Lot Essay

The present work illustrates a type of canoe that had disapperead from use by the middle of the XIXth century, but of which models were still made after that date.

The creature painted on the model is impossible to accurately identify (only the painter and his client really knew for sure), but it may depict a large and complex sea monster, of which many are known to populate the myths and stories of the Northwest Coast people. The small face above the snout of the main head at the bow may represent a spermwhale-like blowhole. The red band painted just below the gunwhale is a common feature carved on these canoes. As seen in other head canoe models, the painting varies in small details from one side to the other, probably due to tendencies of particular artists rather than iconographic reasons.
