Lot Essay

The present wristwatch is a very well-preserved representative of a “Big Red” Daytona reference 6263, the name derived from the bright red "Daytona" designation, a most popular model in today's market.

Introduced in 1969, the Rolex chronograph reference 6263 has become throughout the years one of the most sought-after Rolex wristwatches. It is the sister reference of the 6265 and replaced the first oyster chronograph, reference 6240. Offered with the upgraded caliber 727 as well as screw down pushers enhancing waterproof abilities, the timepiece bears the “Oyster” designation on the upper-half of its dial and differed from the 6265 through its black bezel graduated to 200 units.

A similar example is illustrated and described in: Ultimate Rolex Daytona, Pucci Papaleo, pp. 448-450.
