Lot Essay

One of the specialties of Patek Philippe is chiming timepieces. Reportedly, President Stern is so concerned with the quality of these watches that he personally approves the sound quality of each and every repeater manufactured by the company. Furthermore, it is not a simple coincidence that the celebratory watch for their 175th anniversary is arguably the most remarkable chiming timepiece ever produced by any maker.

Reference 5079 fully embodies the most iconic traits of a Patek Philippe wristwatch. It is a pure repeater, without any further complication. The dial is an epitome of elegance: deceivingly simple, with only subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, and the old school railway divisions. A hint - subtle to the extreme - of the importance of the timepiece is given by the enamel dial: an extremely costly, lengthy and difficult dial manufacturing process reserved only for exceptional timepieces.

It is an absurdly rare timepiece, especially if considered it is a modern production watch: it was produced only from 2001 to 2005, with a total output estimated at a little over 70 pieces.
To the best of our knowledge, the present example has never been offered in public before.

Last, but not least, it is a cathedral repeater, meaning that it produces a deeper and longer chime, thanks to the extra-long gongs. Fitting such resonators in a wristwatch case without them touching each other or component of the movement (and thus spoiling the purity of the chime) is a very difficult feat of engineering only the best watchmakers try and venture.

Combining elegance, rarity, understatement and engineering prowess, reference 5079 perfectly epitomizes what collectors look for in a Patek Philippe wristwatch.
