Details
CHIPPENDALE, Thomas (1718-1779). The Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers Director. London: printed for the Author, 1755.

The Foyle copy of the second edition of Chippendales famous and hugely influential furniture design book. The Director was the most ambitious and successful pattern book issued by a craftsman and was the first of its kind – earlier collections of furniture designs having been small-scale and intended for the trade. In his preface, Chippendale states that his intention behind the publication of The Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers Director was ‘to assist the one in the choice, and the other in the execution of the designs’. The first edition of 1754 was an immediate success and was followed by this second edition and a third in 1762.
