Lot Essay

Flower baskets such as these were designed to stand, or in many cases hang, in the tokonama (alcove) of a tearoom or reception room. Their forms refer to ancient Chinese or rustic vessels, often emulating humble agricultural utensils. The exposed materials left close to their natural state seen in Japanese baskets, such as smoked bamboo or gnarled root wood, were particularly appreciated by the bunjin (literati) and practitioners of tea, who used them as vases or surfaces to display unique flower arrangements for tea ceremonies.
