A RARE AND FINELY CARVED INSCRIBED BAMBOO BRUSH POT
CHINA, QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

拍品專文

The current brush pot presents the scene of 'A Literary Gathering at the Orchid Pavilion', the Lanting Xu, a collection of poems composed at the Orchid Pavilion by Wang Xizhi. This latter scene refers to Wang Xizhi, the famous Eastern Jin dynasty calligrapher who is known as the 'Sage of Calligraphy', and his forty-one companions composing a collection of thirty-seven poems on the 3rd of March, the ninth year of Yonghe (corresponding to AD 353), while on an outing in the countryside.
Yunqiao Shanren, also called Deng Wei, was a native of Jiading in Jiangsu province and was active during the 18th century. He is known as one of the most revered bamboo carvers of the Qianlong period. See a brushpot, also carved by Deng Wei, sold in Christie's, Hong Kong, 30 May 2006, lot 1492 and another one sold in Christie's New York, 19 September 2007, lot 33.
