Lot Essay

Adriaan Valckenier, Governor-General of the Indies 1737-41, was the leading member of the influential Valckenier family, which was deeply involved with the Dutch East India Company. He ordered at least 14 tea or dinner services or sets of vases, a number of which were lost at sea on their homeward journey. See J. Kroes, Chinese Armorial Porcelain for the Dutch Market, pp. 131-4 and 184-5.
