LARGE MAYAN POLYCHROME STUCCO HEAD OF A DIGNITARY

The youthful moon-faced lord with downward cast eyes, full parted lips flanked by raised scarification, the chin and cheeks painted with black decorative tattoos, surmounted by a knotted turban.

Mayan portrait heads combine individual traits as well as idealized qualities. Their public display in stone and stucco dates back to the Preclassic era in the Maya world. Such portrait heads bridged the royalty portrayed to important gods.

Tête en stuc représentant un jeune seigneur au visage arrondi avec un regard tombant, une bouche ouverte encadrée de scarifications, aux joues et au menton décorés de tatouages décoratifs en noir et surmontée d’un turban noué.

Les têtes-portraits mayas mêlaient des traits individualisés de portraits humains avec des évocations idéalisées. On peut en trouver en pierre ou en stuc au sein de la zone maya et elles sont postérieures la Période Préclassique. De telles têtes-portraits évoquaient une passerelle entre les souverains représentés et les dieux importants.
