PATEK PHILIPPE. A STAINLESS STEEL TONNEAU-SHAPED WRISTWATCH
Lot incorporates material from endangered species … 顯示更多 Patek Philippe - Time OnlyWhen Thierry Stern was asked his thoughts on Patek Philippe’s Golden Ellipse, he said that it ‘represents purity and beauty’. His words could equally be used to describe the wider family of Patek Philippe ‘time only’ watches, almost all of which belie the exceptional savoir faire behind the development of these references. The ‘time only’ models have formed the backbone of Patek Philippe’s catalogue throughout and in particular during the golden age of wristwatch design in the 1950s and 1960s. Though understated in design, collectors appreciate that many of these references represent some of the most interesting technical developments that took place in the mid-20th century and their superb quality and clean lines. Fitted with state-of-the-art movements and created by the very best available case makers and dial makers of the period. Collectors and connoisseurs are also drawn to the ‘time only’ references because of the sheer variety of shapes, colours, sizes and dial types that can be found among them. Because many of these watches were originally purchased to be used regularly by their owners, few survive in very good condition. It is therefore with great pleasure that Christie’s are able to offer a variety of very well preserved examples in this auction. What is often overlooked is the relative rarity of some Patek Philippe ‘time only’ watches, indeed only a few hundred examples of some references were produced and others in even fewer numbers. Pieces selected for their rarity, beauty, condition and originality offered here include a platinum reference 2484 of which only 80 were made and only 12 are known publically. The reference 2481, made between 1950 and 1960 is nicknamed ‘King Size’ for its 37 mm. case and is one of the largest watches made by Patek Philippe at that period. Produced for a period of around 20 years between 1961 and 1981 is the perennially popular reference 3445. Known as the ‘Monodate’, it was the first wristwatch to be fitted with an automatic movement with date function, this combination of simplicity, innovation and sheer quality epitomizes the Patek Philippe brand. The selection of ‘time only’ Patek Philippe watches would be incomplete without examples of the Golden Ellipse which has achieved near cult status among collectors. An excellent reference 3548, the first Golden Ellipse reference launched in 1968 is sure to appeal to those who value purity and beauty in their timepieces.PATEK PHILIPPECALATRAVA CROSS DIAL REF. 3574ANOTHER PROPERTY

Fresh to the market, the present specimen is an exciting and unusual example of reference 3574. Launched in 1970 and in production until 1974, a very short time span for a Patek Philippe reference, it is estimated that the total output for this reference to be around 500 pieces. It was available exclusively in steel with silvered matte dial, or blue dial, or Calatrava tapisserie dial (like the present watch). So far only 22 watches are known from the market from which only 10 with the Calatrava tapisserie dial.

On top of all of this, it has to be noted that this watch is not only delivered with a cornucopia of original documents, but furthermore that they are fitted into a display folder. Such practice, today the standard for highly complicated Patek Philippe pieces.
