Lot Essay

This work is a typical example of floral compositions from late Yuan to early Ming period. Stylistically, it effectively juxtaposes the bold, concentrated pigments used in the flowers with the diffuse washes that describe the undulating leaves and stems. The painting's silk support is typical of the period, using rounded threads in a relatively looser weave than seen in paintings of a later date.
