formed in the shape of a rabbit, the cover realistically painted in enamel, the outer border set with seed-pearls, the sides and base with shaped panels of gold diaper-work engine-turning, set within chased foliate borders and blue enamel frames

Lot Essay

Bessière & Schneider were registered as working in Geneva from 1805-1808. They are recorded in Haydn Williams, Enamels of the World 1700-2000 The Khalili Collections, 2009. The collection contains several pieces by this maker. Bessière & Schneider, despite only remaining in partnership for a short period of time, are credited with creating a small group of extremely high-quality enamel work, specializing in boxes painted as flowers, animals or baskets of fruit.
