The pattern for this decorative style of lady's desk, mounted with flowered Sèvres plaques, was made in the mid-1760s by Martin Carlin (maître in 1766) under the direction of the marchand-mercier Simon-Philippe Poirier. Examples stamped by Carlin are preserved in the Musée Nissim de Camondo, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Huntington and at Waddesdon - around which G. de Bellaigue centres a thorough description of the model in The James A. de Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor vol. II, London, 1974, pp. 477-483.
