Lot Essay

The present Omega ref. 2914-4 is one of the very small number of early reference SC2914-4 “FAP Flightmasters” to appear in public to date. Watches made for the FAP (Acronym of Fuerza Aérea del Perú) are nowadays extremely collectible due to their rarity.

For most collectors, the name ‘Flightmaster’ is associated with the large and memorable chronograph which was launched in 1969. In fact, Omega registered the name ‘Flightmaster’ under the Swiss Patent number 201929 as early as 19 July 1957.

The name ‘Flightmaster’ first appeared on both the dial and caseback of a watch in 1958/1959. This was the result of the collaboration between Omega and the Fuerza Aérea Peruana (FAP), the company became one of their official suppliers in 1958.

The FAP placed an order specifying the rebranding of the reference CK 2914 ‘Railmaster’ model. It is fascinating to realise that the first ever ‘Flightmaster’ model was supplied to the Peruvian Air Force more than a decade before the ‘Flightmaster’ name became world famous as a large dual time zone chronograph.

Formally established since 1950, the FAP ordered a variety of instruments from commercial manufacturers, including wristwatches. The very first official supplier was Omega, starting in 1958. The watches available to the members of the Air Force were featured in the Fuerza's catalogue of "functional watches for aviation".
