Celebrating their 130th anniversary in 2017, Manufacture d'Horlogerie Eberhard & Co. was founded in 1887 by Georges-Emile Eberhard in La Chaux-de-Fonds. In 1919, the company presented its first wrist chronograph featuring a hinged case with articulated lugs on a strap. This early single button chronograph gave way for an unprecedented chronograph with two buttons for stop and restart without resetting in 1939 (see lot 153), then in 1939 the «rattrapante», or split-seconds chronograph made its appearance (lots 151 & 152), followed by the Extra-fort chronograph in the early 1940s (lot 154).Today, after 133 years of uninterrupted history, Eberhard & Co. maintains an enduring position among the independent Swiss watch manufacturers.

Lot Essay

Eberhard & Co. split seconds chronographs were made in very small numbers, few have ever appeared at auction and of those, the present watch is one of the most appealing. The superb champagne dial with tachymeter and telemeter scales shows no signs of cosmetic enhancement. The case displays very little signs of use despite its almost 80 years of age.

The movement, caliber EB 1600 with column wheel, is fitted with a two button split second system. The winding crown button starts, stops and resets the chronograph to zero, the button at 2 o’clock is for the split function and it features the functionality to lock the chronograph by sliding the bottom pusher towards the winding crown.
