Lot Essay

Biblical scenes, such as those portrayed in the current and following lot became particularly popular in Qajar Iran and can be found on lacquer work and oil paintings. Such images were part of a series which would have adorned the interior of a house, retelling the narratives to their viewers, with heavily Persianate visual aspect. This lot and the following painting are both the work of one master or workshop as is evident from the technique of shading, colouring and the facial features of the figures.
