Each fragment decorated under the glaze in cobalt-blue, turquoise and bole-red with one with a flowering vine and part of a cusped cartouche, the other with a moulded edge framing a border of alternating cusped palmettes containing flowerheads, both mounted on wooden stands
Tile illustrated left 4 ¾ x 5 1/8in. (11.9 x 13cm.); tile illustrated right 5 ¾ x 6 ¼in. (14.6 x 15.9cm.)

One of these fragments (that illustrated right) bears close resemblance to two tile spandrels in the Sadberk Hanim Museum (SHM 4182-HK.1119; Altun, Carswell and Öney, 1991, no.I.78, p.47). Like those ours has a strongly moulded edge that borders a band of alternating cusped palmettes containing flowerheads. A similar pair of tiles from a spandrel, formerly in the collection of Theodor Sehmer (1885-1979) was sold in these Rooms, 27 April 2004, lot 242. Like ours the Sehmer tiles lacked the green of Sadberk Hanim ones – instead sharing the colour palette of most of the tiles in the Rustem Pasha Mosque of 1561. A border tile of related design sold in these Rooms, 10 October 2000, lot 207. Tiles of the same design are to be found in the Mosque of Rustem Pasha (Öz, n.d, pl.XLI, no.81).
