Lot Essay

A tile of related design with cusped cartouches containing floral sprays is in the collection of Ömer Koç (Bilgi, 2015, no.25, pp.134-35). In the catalogue entry that accompanies the Koç tile, Hülya Bilgi writes that related designs can be seen in the tiles of the Tomb of Selim II (1577) at the Hagia Sophia, in the Mosque of Takkeci Ibrahim Aga (1592) in the Topkapi district of Istanbul, in the Hagia Sophia Library and in the Fountain Hall in the Apartment of the Holy Mantle at the Topkapi Palace.
