Lot Essay

This fragment was reputedly once with Dikran Kelekian (1868-1951) a notable collector and dealer of ancient, medieval, and Islamic art. Of Armenian heritage, he was born in Turkey and, with his brother Kevork, they established themselves as prominent dealers in antiquities in Constantinople, now Istanbul. A large number of fragments from important and early Classical carpets appeared on the market towards the beginning of the 20th century with many emerging from Paris and Constantinople. A larger 'vase' carpet fragment came from the same source (Gaston Migeon, La Collection Kelekian: Etoffes & Tapis, Paris, 1909, pl.2) and was more recently offered at Sotheby's, New York, 1 October 2015, lot 98.
