Lot Essay

The bold centralised cruciform medallion on this village rug from the Karapinar area is a characteristic outline that harks back to far older animal fur rugs. Eberhart Herrmann published a smaller example than the present lot (see E.Herrmann, Seltene Orientteppich VIII, Munich 1986, pp.40-41, pl.12) while a much longer example bearing three lozenge medallions with arrowhead spandrels is illustrated by W. Bruggemann and H.Bohmer (Teppiche der Bauern und Nomaden in Anatolien, Munich, 1982, pp.162-3, pl.20.) A similar rug with a single medallion sold in these Rooms, 28 April 2005, lot 141.
