Provenance

Lot Essay

Because of the number of undated editions, uncertainty exists as to when the first edition of this work actually appeared; Durling cites two editions of ca. 1520 though the composer of one of the bibliographical notes concerning this copy gives the date of the first edition as 1530. Pierre Sergent, who was not an active Paris printer until the 1530's, does not appear to have published an edition before 1531, so the date of this edition is certainly false. There were also a large number of English editions, the first appearing in ca. 1543.
