Both works are presentation copies given to Capt. Alex Buchanan, 39th Regiment, on the same date. The former, with a Guadeloupe imprint, is inscribed on the title: "A present from the author Mon. De Payen of St. Maries, Cape têrre Guadeloupe 27th April 1794," and has the recipient's ownership inscription to verso of half title and final blank; also two further pencil inscriptions of regimental officers to title. The latter has the title inscription: "A present from the author Mon. Payen de St. Marie 27th April 1794 Buchanan Capt. 39th Regt."
