Born in a prominent family in Tianjin, the respected scholar, collector, connoisseur, and art dealer Jung Ying Tsao (1929-2011) began studying Chinese paintings from his family’s collection in his youth. After relocating to Taiwan in 1949, he studied under his mentor Li Lincan (1913-1999), Deputy Director of the National Palace Museum in Taipei. Mr. Tsao moved to California in 1963 and established J. Y. Tsao Oriental Fine Arts in San Francisco in 1968, which later became the Far Eastern Fine Arts, Inc. in Berkeley. Over the decades, Mr. Tsao built a balanced collection consisting of paintings by artists such as Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong. Many works from his collection entered the permanent collections of major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. After his passing, Mr Tsao’s family established the Mozhai Foundation in 2013 to carry on his legacy and his wish to promote public education on Chinese art and culture.
