Lot Essay

Born in Shanghai, Ding Cong (1916-2009), whose nom de plume was “Little Ding,” was the most famous Chinese cartoonist and illustrator of the twentieth century. Most of his oeuvre consisted of satires and commentaries on politics and current events. His cartoons appeared frequently in major newspapers and magazines. His most well-known illustrations included Lu Xun’s The True Story of Ah Q, Lao She’s Rickshaw Boy and Four Generations under One Roof, among others. His collected works have been published numerous times, several of which have been translated into English, French, German, and Japanese. He was one of the co-founders of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts.
While touring Qingcheng Mountain near Chengdu in 1943, Ding Cong encountered Xu Beihong and Liao Jingwen and this current lot was given to Ding Cong by the artist at the time.
