of lenticular form, each end with exotic head carved in low relief, haliotis-shell-inlay eyes, a panel of scrolls at the border between -- 78cm. long

Lot Essay

The heads are of a type sometimes described as of manaia. The good quality of the design and carving would indicate that the bowl was carved during the second half of the last century, probably in Rotorua or Bay of Plenty.
