Lot Essay
According to M. Renk, "Poetry on Three Agate Snuff Bottles", p. , the poems inscribed on this bottle may be translated:
Ode to Spring
The Spring is mild, the sun is bright
The waves are calm within my sight.
The light in sky and sea
A shimmering pale blue that stretches to infinity.
The sand gulls here are found,
And rainbow fish abound.
Sweet grass now rims the shore around;
And orchids flourish on an island in the sound.
and:
Vermillion Phoenix Pay Homage
Again, Spring comes to earth and to heaven,
Rain and dew from the sky keep the four seasons fresh,
And forever renewed they continue their endless revolving.
Among people, the best of all traits - to be loyal and show filial piety.
As the subjects are loyal to their Sovereign,
So the children defer to their parent for their wisdom and grace.
A very similar inscribed agate bottle also supported on a pierced foot, but lacking the inscription Qianlong yuti, is in the Denis S. K. Low Collection and illustrated by R. Kleiner, Treasures from the Sanctum of Enlightened Respect, Singapore, 1999, no. 173.
