Although at one point believed to be English, the use of poplar as a primary wood, the construction, and the robust architectural form of this table suggests that it is of north German manufacture. Designs for related center tables dated to the 1830s are illustrated in G. Himmelheber, Deutsche belvorlagen 1800-1900, Munich, 1988, pp. 314-5, figs. 1425 and 1437.
