A golden trowel of this type was used in the ceremony of the laying the foundation stone of the University of Hongkong on March 16th 1910 by the Governor of Hong Kong Sir Frederick Lugard. The building was erected with founds donated by Sir Hormusjee Narojee Mody. The golden trowel is now in the Hong Kong University Museum. In remembrance of the founding of the University of Hong Kong two silver trowels were presented during the ceremony to the Viceroys of the two Guangs (Guangdong and Guangxi) and Two Jiangs
(Jiangsu and Zhejiang) Zhang Renjun and Yuan Shuxun. One of these trowels is presented here. This commemorative trowel revokes a ceremony, that “marks an epoch in the annals of Hong Kong as well as in the history of all South-China.” (Hong Kong Telegraph, 17 March 1910).
