WINES FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE LATE DESMOND HEYWARD
These iconic wines, lots 628-694, form the backbone of a collection assembled by the late Mr Desmond Heyward, a true wine lover. Mr Heyward enjoyed entertaining friends at his Oxfordshire country house and had a reputation as a generous host, a reputation matched by that of his expansive cellar - a treasure trove of the world’s finest wines. A brilliant collection of vintages from Domaine Raveneau has our wine specialists in paroxysms of excitement. Mr Heyward’s family were kind enough to share bottles with our specialists when we visited and we can truly say that the exquisite perfume, generous body and evolved, warm-fruited profile of these Raveneau 1er and Grand Cru is exceptional. A beautiful collection of Champagne, including Krug 1953 and 1982 in magnum, Clos du Mesnil 1985 and Pol Roger 1952, is offered and Red Burgundy from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Armand Rousseau, Domaine Dujac and Domaine François Lamarche also appears alongside a host of superb Bordeaux.
The stone cellar which housed this collection is an original feature of the grand early 18th century house which was home to Mr Heyward, his wife Fiona and their family for some four decades. The house and gardens were more than just a home and were, along with their ever evolving art collection, a passion. Mr Heyward approached his wine collection with equal zeal and dedication acquiring directly from estates in France or from UK agents over many decades, much to the delight of those friends fortunate enough to be entertained in his elegant Queen Anne dining room with views out across the Oxfordshire countryside. The labels for this collection should be mentioned, as many are loose or soiled, as is often the case where wines have been stored in country house cellars where the temperature and humidity are perfect for maintaining the wines vinous condition. It is the levels of the wines that impresses our specialists, it is rare to find treasured vintages from such famed Domaines as here, with such high fill levels and exceptional colour. We invite Christie’s wine loving clients to explore the wines of the Desmond Heyward collection and to the lucky purchasers, to raise a glass to this exceptional collection as you experience these fabulous wines.
The Desmond Heyward collection of paintings, furniture and works of art will be offered at Christie’s in 2021.
