Lot Essay

Emily Mae Smith’s sly, humorous, and riveting compositions nod to art historical movements such as Symbolism and Art Nouveau, though with a distinctly 21st-century spin. Her genre-defying paintings speak through a vocabulary of signs and symbols addressing timely subjects including gender, class, and violence. Smith’s paintings tackle art history's phallocentric myths and create imagery for subjectivities absent in visual culture, specifically the feminist perspective. 

Shandaken Projects has supported over 175 important but under-recognized artists with free studio space, housing, and educational opportunities since 2012. Through these services, as well as public programs like commissions and exhibitions, Shandaken creates possibilities for cultural practitioners to forge new pathways in their work and in the world.

Shandaken’s signature residency program is produced in collaboration with Storm King Art Center, inviting artists from all disciplines to live and work on the grounds of this world-renowned outdoor museum. Shandaken: Storm King is focused on process and experimentation, offering participants uninterrupted time in the studio and accommodations in an historic farmhouse, with access to Storm King’s stunning grounds just steps from their back door. Shandaken also offers year-long awards of free studio space on Governors Island, bringing artists to the gem of New York Harbor for research, reflection, and production. The organization’s postgraduate fellowship in contemporary painting, produced in collaboration with Cooper Union, Hunter, and NYU, has offered critical discussion and mentorship by luminaries like Faith Ringgold, Howardena Pindell, and Amy Sillman since 2018.

Once called “the most important residency you’ve never heard of” by Artsy, Shandaken hosts artists at critical moments in their careers. Alumni have gone on to participate in prestigious exhibitions like the Whitney Biennial and exhibit at preeminent institutions like the Museum of Modern Art, Palais de Tokyo, and the Tate.

Shandaken Projects is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization supported in large part by its unique membership program. Members receive one exclusive, commissioned limited edition artwork each year, by artists like Carol Bove, James Welling, and Sam Moyer.
