Lot Essay

Besides their function as manuscript covers, bindings such as ours were amongst the objects which were displayed in open niches in reception rooms of upper-class Syrian residences during the Ottoman period. There is a very similar binding in the Metropolitan Museum which was probably made in the same workshop given the identical use of binding stamps on both examples (inv. no.1975.192.18).
