Tapering cylindrical and on spreading foot, the hinged domed cover with openwork thumbpiece, engraved with a coat-of-arms within foliate mantling, marked underneath, on cover and handle, with scratch weight 48:0
9 ¼ in. (23.5 cm.) high
47 oz. 6 dwt. (1,488 gr.)
The arms are those of the See of Carlisle impaling Fleming, for Sir George Fleming 2nd Bt. (1667-1747), Bishop of Carlisle. Educated at Sedburgh and St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, he joined the priesthood in 1694 and became domestic chaplain to Bishop Thomas Smith of Carlisle. He was appointed to a number of livings and became Dean of Carlisle in 1727. He was nominated Bishop in 1734 and enthroned the following year. He succeeded his brother to the baronetcy and the family estate Rydal Hall in 1736.
