GIULIO CESARE PROCACCINI, STUDY OF A HALF-LENGTH NAKED MAN WITH A BEARDED HEAD, RED CHALK

This is a characteristic study by Giulio Cesare Procaccini, who, together with his brother Camillo, was one of the leading painters in Milan around 1600. Very similar modelling by way of careful hatching in red chalk can be found in many other drawings by the artist (compare N. Ward Neilson, Giulio Cesare Procaccini. Designatore, Busto Arsizio, 2004, nos. 124, 148, fig. 1, pl. X, fig. 1); for the expressive profile of the man at lower right, compare ibid., nos. 38, 141, figs. 53, 86. The study of a man holding a cup appears to be a study for a Saint John in a Baptism of Christ. Procaccini painted the subject at least once, in a picture dated around 1616-1618 in the Slovenské národné múzeum, Bratislava (inv. O 93; H. Brigstocke and O. D’Albo, Giulio Cesare Procaccini. Life and Work, Turin, 2020, no. 82, ill. pp. 125, 82).

Cette étude est caractéristique de Giulio Cesare Procaccini, qui, avec son frère Camillo, était l'un des principaux peintres de Milan vers 1600. Un modèle très similaire avec des hachures soignées à la craie rouge se retrouve dans de nombreux autres dessins de l'artiste (voir N. Ward Neilson, Giulio Cesare Procaccini. Designatore, Busto Arsizio, 2004, n° 124, 148, fig. 1, pl. X, fig. 1) ; pour le profil expressif de l'homme en bas à droite, comparer ibid. n° 38, 141, fig. 53, 86. L'étude d'un homme tenant une coupe semble être une étude pour un saint Jean dans un Baptême du Christ. Procaccini a peint le sujet au moins une fois, dans un tableau daté vers 1616-1618 et conservé au Slovenské národné múzeum à Bratislava (inv. O 93 ; H. Brigstocke et O. D'Albo, Giulio Cesare Procaccini. Life and Work, Turin, 2020, n° 82, ill. p. 125, 82).
