CRONIKE VAN BRABANT – Die alder excellenste cronyke van Brabant. Antwerp: Roland van den Dorp, 28 February 1497 [but 1498].
A fragment of the first edition of Roland van den Dorp’s magnum opus. This copiously illustrated work traces the Dukes of Brabant back to their legendary Trojan ancestor, Brabo. Only one complete copy is recorded at auction; not in the Bavarian State Library. HC 5004; GW 6667; Bod-inc C-193; Goff C-475; ISTC ic00475000.
Chancery folio (270 x 197mm). 152 leaves (of 216, lacking gatherings a-h and C-D). One elaborate decorated initial in red, blue, and green with floral sprays, other initials and capital strokes in red, many woodcuts (dampstained and dustoiled, a few small repairs, including one in text, final leaf remargined at outer edges). 19th-century boards (joints loose, caps damaged, worn). Provenance: Paul Menso (1876-1957; book label).
